SEMAL KA PED
What happens when the boundaries between reality and imagination begin to disappear?
SEMAL KA PED, a Hindi version of Tim Crouch’s acclaimed play An Oak Tree, brings together grief, hypnosis, and the power of imagination.
A father has lost his young daughter in a road accident. Unable to accept her absence, he begins to see the semal tree that stands near the place where she died as his daughter, transforming an ordinary tree into a living presence of his loss.
The man responsible for the tragedy is a stage hypnotist. Struggling to regain his ability to hypnotise people after the accident, he performs his show night after night. Then, one evening, an unexpected volunteer steps forward.
What follows is an extraordinary encounter between two strangers, unfolding into a profound journey through grief, guilt, responsibility and the possibility of transformation.
A glass of water becomes a tree. A stranger becomes a father. A performer becomes transformed.
Intimate, playful, unsettling and tender, SEMAL KA PED explores what it means to believe, remember and let go.
The play deals with grief and the death of a child. There are also references to farting and defecating onstage, as well as some loud sound cues. There may also be strobe lighting.
